Man jailed 14 months for cheating woman of RM600

SIBU: A 59-year-old man who impersonated a Road Transport Department (RTD) officer and cheated a woman of RM600 was today (Sept 1) sentenced to 14 months’ jail by a Magistrates’ Court here.

The court was told that Imran Othman Pawi had cheated a 50-year-old woman by deceiving her into believing that he was a RTD officer who could help her obtain a driving licence by inducing her into giving him money RM600.

The offence was committed on Aug 23 at a hotel in Jalan Sentral, here.

who pleaded guilty to the cheating charge before Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokthar who convicted him of the offence as charged.

He was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of not less than one year and not more than 10 years and liable to whipping as well as a fine upon conviction.

Prosecuting officer DPP Harvind Raja Gopal told the court that police investigation revealed that the victim had transferred the money amounting to a total of RM600 on three occasions.

The accused confessed to committing the offence because he was facing financial difficulties.

Imran pleaded guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokthar presided over the case.
