Man jailed a year for threatening wife’s life

KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here today (Apr 10) sentenced a 39-year-old unemployed man to 12 months’ imprisonment for threatening to kill his wife earlier this month.

Mohammad Yusof Abu Bakar pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.

He was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction. The court ordered the sentence to run from the date of conviction.

According to the facts of the case, the offence was committed at a consulate’s office here on April 2 at about 7.45 am, where the accused threatened his wife by saying he would kill her using his car.

The incident occurred during an argument between the couple.

During the altercation, he told her, “I won’t let you go. You wait for me and I will hit you until you’re dead” (“aku sik lepaskan kau, tunggu kitak, kamek akan langgar kitak balik kerja kau sampai mati”).

Fearing for her safety, the victim managed to flee the scene and later lodged a police report.

The accused was arrested five days later on April 7.

It is understood that the couple had been married for two years but had been separated for the past two months prior to the incident.

The case was prosecuted by Prosecution Officer, Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Illin, while the accused was unrepresented.
