SIBU: A 51-year-old man was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court here today for attempted murder with firearm.
Wong Sing Dieng from Jalan Berjaya pleaded guilty to the charge against him that he had abetted with another person to discharge a firearm at Lau Ang Ho with such knowledge and under such circumstances that, if by that act he had caused his death, he would be guilty of murder which is an offence committed of his abetment.
The incident took place along Majau Road on August 24 at about 5:20 pm.
As such, he had committed an offence punishable under Section 307 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 109 of the same Code, which upon conviction, provides for an imprisonment up to 10 years and liable to fine, and if hurt is caused to any person by such act, the offender could be imprisonment up to 20 years.
According to the facts of the case, on August 24 at about 5:30 pm, while Lau (complainant) was on his way to Sibu and approaching Penyangkai Road at Majau Road-Kanowit junction, he saw a man standing beside a car, holding a shotgun and aiming at his direction.
The complainant then heard a gunshot and immediately accelerated his vehicle and proceeded to the Kanowit Police Station.
While fleeing the scene, he noticed that a car was following him until it lost control.
Subsequently, he lodged a police report for further action and to ensure his personal safety.
Based on the information received, on September 2 at about 9:50 pm, Inspector Sudiman led a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Sibu and proceeded to a house at Jalan Berjaya.
Upon arrival, Inspector Sudiman forcibly opened one of the room doors inside the house, and found a man hiding behind it.
The man, identified as the accused, was subsequently arrested with a moblle phone seized from him.
The case was prosecuted by DPP Nuralisa Natasha Nazrulzam before Judge Musyiri Peet.
The accused, represented by legal counsel, Harold Emparak, was ordered to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest on September 2.
