SIBU: The Magistrates’ Court here has sentenced a 31-year-old man to a total of 12 months’ imprisonment for committing two criminal offences against his wife.

Magistrate Romario Jonoi convicted Tino Alphonsus from Bawang Assan after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

For each charge, Tino was sentenced to six months’ jail.

In the first charge, he was accused of causing hurt to his wife, Layam Bigau, at a house along Tiong Hua Road on April 11 at about 9:00 pm.

The other charge against him stated that he had threatened to cause death to the victim at the same place and time.

However, Magistrate Romario ordered him to serve the sentences concurrently.

According to facts of the case, on April 11 at about 7:00 am, while the complainant (Layam) was working at a shop in Jalan Chew Siik Hiong, she was approached by two men who were looking for her husband, as he had borrowed a sum of money from their company.

The complainant then brought both men to her house to meet her husband (identified as the accused later) before returning to work.

After she returned home at around 9:00 pm, she borrowed her husband’s mobile phone.

An argument ensued between her and her husband because the two men had come to collect a debt from him.

Her husband then slapped her face and head with his hand numerous times, causing her to sustain injuries.

According to her, her husband often hit her and she felt that she could no longer stand his actions.

A day later at about 5:35 pm, a team of police led by Insp. Muhammad Abu Bakar detained the accused at Lorong Lai Chee.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Haris Danial while the accused has no legal representation.
