KAPIT: An elderly man was killed after the vehicle he was travelling in plunged about 20 feet into a ravine along Jalan Mujong, Bukit Banyau, here today.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the accident happened at around 8.15 am, leaving the victim trapped inside the pickup truck.

Firefighters from Kapit station were dispatched to the scene, some 44 kilometres away, following a distress call.

Upon arrival, the team descended into the ravine using rescue ropes and a stretcher to extricate the victim.

Paramedics later confirmed that the victim, identified as Robin Lubang, 60, had died at the scene. His remains were later brought up to the roadside and handed over to the police for further action.

The rescue operation ended at 11.02 am.

Bomba said access to the crash site proved challenging as fire engines were unable to pass through the narrow road with steep embankments, forcing the team to proceed to the exact location in a Hilux.
