KUCHING: A plunge into a deep roadside drain ended in tragedy when a car allegedly veered off the road last night (Jan 17), killing one man and leaving another fighting for his life.

The accident happened at around 11.30 pm along Jalan Penrissen, Batu 8.

It was reported that a Honda Civic EG6 skidded out of control before plunging about 30 feet into the drain, with the impact ejecting both occupants from the vehicle

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said one of the victims, Bong Bing Wen, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, with his remains handed over to the police for further action.

Meanwhile, the second victim, a 23-year-old man, sustained serious injuries but was found conscious when emergency responders arrived.

He was later rushed to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for urgent medical treatment.

It was unclear who was driving the car at the time of the crash.

Firefighters from Kota Sentosa station battled the steep embankment to retrieve both victims, carefully lifting them out of the drain using a stretcher.

The rescue operation concluded at 1.10 am today (Jan 18), with the case handed over to the police for further investigation.
