KUCHING: This festive season took an ironic turn for a local man who found himself on Santa’s naughty list after police arrested him over suspected drug possession.
The 24-year-old was picked up by Kuching narcotics police in front of a hotel along Jalan Tabuan Dayak at around 5.45 pm on Monday.
Inspections led to discovery of six plastic packets containing suspected methamphetamine, weighing a total of 5.43g with an estimated street value of RM597 — hardly the kind of “holiday treats” worth celebrating.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspect’s initial urine test returned positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Background checks found that the suspect has no prior criminal record, making this his first brush with the law just before Christmas.
The man is being remanded for four days until Dec 27 to facilitate investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Upon conviction, the offence carries a jail term of up to five years, and whipping up to nine strokes.
