KUCHING: A man from Simunjan with a history of criminal and drug-related records was arrested following a high-speed chase from Kota Samarahan to Stampin Tengah early this morning.

The suspect, 31, attempted to flee when a police patrol team Kota Samarahan station stopped the vehicle the man was in at the back alley of a hotel located at Kota Samarahan at 2.50 am.

Kota Samarahan Ddstrict police chief Superintendent Damataries Lautin said the man who refused to comply, had sped off and was heading towards Kampung Sindang, Kota Samarahan before doubling back to Jalan Aiman Mall.

“The man continued to flee despite being ordered to stop via loudspeaker, prompting the police to call for backup from a mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) unit in Kota Samarahan.

“During the chase, the suspect rammed a police Toyota Hilux car, causing scratches and dents to its left door,” he said in a statement today.

Damataries said the chase later entered the administrative zone of the Kuching district police headquarters, where MPV units from Kuching joined the operation.

“After nearly an hour or pursuit, the man abandoned his vehicle at Lorong 6, Stampin Tengah and tried to escape into the nearby bushes, but was caught shortly after,” he said.

He said a body search on the suspect found no illegal items, and police later seized the car and key used in the attempted escape.

“Checks revealed the suspect has multiple prior records, including burglary and drug-related offences, with cases registered in Simunjan.

“Police also suspects the man may be linked to other housebreaking cases,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties.
