PADAWAN: A local man’s three-year business of operating a gunsmith repair workshop has come to a halt after a police raid yesterday (Dec 6).
According to Padawan OCPD Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, police seized two rifles, a variety of shotgun components, equipment used to craft or repair weapons and ammunition in the operation codenamed ‘Op Laras’ which was carried out at Mile 19, Jalan Kuching-Serian at about 11.30am by a police team from the Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) D9 branch and Padawan CID
“The suspect in his late 50s, was detained for failing to possess any firearm and ammunition license as well as turning his residence into a weapon repair workshop without license. Initial investigations also revealed that the suspect’s ‘business’ began three years ago for the purpose of earning a side income,” said OCPD Abang Zainal
The case is being investigated under Section 8 (a) and Section 9 (2) of the Weapons Act 1960 which carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine up to RM10,000 or both, if convicted.
The arrest was made following a series of intelligence monitoring and the public has been warned to not take laws into its own hands by carrying out illegal criminal activities.
