BINTULU: Police have arrested a local man for allegedly breaking into two self-service laundromats and making off with over RM10,000 in cash at Tanjung Kidurong last week.
The suspect’s arrest was made following two CCTV footages that went viral on social media.
Bintulu Police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said they received three reports regarding the break-ins, which occurred on July 28 and 30.
The first incident happened on July 28 at around 6:15 pm, while the second and third took place in the early hours of July 30, at around 3:30 am.
“Police launched a probe and later arrested the suspect after identifying him through the CCTV recordings.
“Further investigations found that the suspect used a hammer and screwdriver to pry open and damage cash compartments in the machines, stealing a total of RM11,250 in cash.
“With this arrest, police managed to solve three other related cases with the help of public information,” he said.
Background checks found that the suspect, who tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, has a prior record involving drug abuse.
He is being remanded until August 4 to facilitate investigations under Sections 380 and 427 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Nixon urged members of the public to continue channelling information and cooperate with authorities in efforts to combat crime.
