SIBU: A 29-year-old local man was arrested by the police for drug trafficking after he was found in possession of methamphetamine worth more than RM12,000 on Thursday.
Sibu Police Chief, ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, in a statement said that the suspect was nabbed by a narcotics team from Sibu District Police Headquarters (IPD Sibu) at the roadside along Jalan Hua Kiew here around 1:30 pm.
“A thorough inspection led to the discovery of 46 transparent plastic packets containing crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine.
“The total gross weight of the drugs is approximately 60.30 grammes, with an estimated street value of RM12,060,” he said in a statement today.
Police also seized a Perodua Bezza, believed to belong to the suspect, estimated to be worth RM30,000.
“A urine test conducted on the suspect came back positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine. Further checks showed the man has no prior criminal record,” Zulkipli added.
The suspect has since been detained and is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952 for drug trafficking, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
He is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act for drug abuse, which carries a penalty of a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
The suspect may also be placed under two years of supervision under Section 38B of the Act.
Zulkipli reiterated that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), especially the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, will continue to intensify efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse.
