Man pays RM1k fine to avoid jail

KUCHING: A man was fined RM1,000 in default of 10 days’ jail by the Magistrates’ Court here n Tuesday (Jan 18) for punching another man.

The accused, Lau Hui Lok, 49, was charged with committing the offence on April 13, 2018 at about 5.45pm at a house in Jalan Angsana off Green Road here.

The offence is punishable under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment for a term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both.

In the case brief, Lau punched the complainant, Tan Chin Hoo, 59, and as a result, the latter suffered cuts and bruises.

Lau was dissatisfied with Tan, who had tried to ask him about a viral post that was posted by the accused’s wife on Facebook regarding his family problem.

Lau paid the RM1,000 fine.
