KUCHING: An undocumented foreigner, trying to evade arrest, climbed onto a narrow signboard ledge outside a shophouse window, but immigration officers quickly intercepted him during an enforcement sweep recently.

He was among 71 foreigners arrested following raids held from the early hours of Dec 9 until 6 am the following day (Dec 10).

The Sarawak Immigration Department said the coordinated operations were carried out across Muara Tuang, Matang Jaya, Kota Sentosa and Taman Berjaya at Mile 4.

Thorough inspections at several residential and business premises, identified as hotspots, have led to the discovery of multiple violations under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

All of the detainees were either overstaying, lacking valid travel documents or abusing social visit passes.

The department said the enforcement action reflect their commitment to curb foreigner’s illegal entry and presence in the state, adding that similar operations will be ramped up in the coming months.

Employers and premises owners were also reminded to comply with proper procedures when employing foreign workers.

Meanwhile, members of the public are encouraged to report information on undocumented individuals to support ongoing enforcement efforts.
