KUCHING: The man who caused a commotion at St Joseph’s Cathedral by shattering a liquor bottle at the altar has a history of mental illness, according to police.

Kuching District police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed that after taking him in for assessment, officers found that he possessed a document or card identifying him as a person with mental health issues from Kota Sentosa.

“It is believed that he may have gone without his medication for several days, which could have led to his actions,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

He also confirmed that the man was taken to the hospital by his family for further evaluation following the incident.

The disruption occurred during the sunset Mass yesterday (Mar 8), shocking churchgoers. However, no injuries were reported.

His family has since appealed to the public for understanding and prayers, urging people not to circulate photos or videos of the incident.
