MERADONG: Police have detained a man believed to be mentally ill after he caused a disturbance at the Bintangor market last Saturday (August 30).

Meradong Police chief, DSP Tansli Mering, said they received a complaint pertaining to the incident at around 7:40 pm on that day.

“Acting swiftly on the report, our team detained the man.

“During the process of arrest, the officers found that he possessed a person with disabilities (OKU) card under the mental disability category,” he said in a statement.

He was later referred to the psychiatric ward at Sibu Hospital on the same day for further treatment and is currently under hospital observation.

Tansli urged the public to remain calm and not speculate on the incident and assured public safety for all.
