SERIAN: A local man was taken into custody after he was found in possession of suspected methamphetamine in Kampung Mentung Berawan yesterday (Jun 23).
Serian police chief Supt Freddy Bian Stanislaus Bian said the arrest was made by the district Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) during an anti-drug sweep.
The suspect was allegedly found possessing 2.8g of suspected methamphetamine, hence, he will be investigated under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The offence is punishable by a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
In addition, he is also being probed under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act after an initial urine screening returned positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.
If convicted, the suspect faces a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, as well as police supervision for a period determined by the court.
Freddy urged members of the public with information on drug trafficking or ketum-related activities to come forward and assist police in combating the drug menace in the community.
Police, particularly the NCID, would continue taking firm action against drug traffickers and repeat drug offenders.
Repeat offenders prosecuted under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 face imprisonment of up to seven years, and up to three strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
