KUCHING: The launch of Mango Media (Borneo) in Sarawak will serve as a gateway for local talent and content to reach global audiences.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the launch of the company, a subsidiary of Hunan Broadcasting System, marks a significant step in positioning the state as a global player in media, digitalisation and talent development.

“This is in line with our aspirations in digitalisation, big data and so on. We are very honoured that in such a period of time, about less than two months, they (Mango Media) found local partners and quickly established this (company).

“Not only that, they have announced a series of events which the Sarawak government will facilitate and support.

“It will definitely benefit enormously for Sarawak nation building be it tourism, education and talent building. We need talent, product and service development.

“All these are part of Sarawak nation building, in line with Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he told reporters after the launching of the company held at JT Building here today.

Dr Sim also highlighted Mango Media’s impressive track record, with an annual revenue exceeding USD3 billion and a portfolio ranging from traditional dramas to digital platforms like Xiaohongshu, a TikTok-like app.

He stressed that embracing social media is critical for Sarawak’s visibility on the global stage.

“You may have very good products from Sarawak, but without social media, the rest of the world will not know. Mango Media gives us a platform to bring Sarawak to the world, and for the world to come to Sarawak.”

He also encouraged collaboration between Mango Media and local institutions and agencies such as TVS, Swinburne University, MBKS, and the tourism sector to develop homegrown content, including the potential for a unique Sarawak-pop or “S-pop” identity showcasing Sarawak’s culture and creativity.
