KUCHING: Police have launched a manhunt for two robbers who allegedly pulled off a heist at an eatery at Jalan Stutong, here yesterday (Jan 24).
Two CCTV footages of the armed robbery had gone viral on social media.
One of the clips showed two masked men — one armed with a weapon believed to be a baseball bat — entering the premises. One of them carried out the crime while the other acted as a lookout.
There were four individuals in the outlet — an employee and three customers seated at separate tables. All of them were robbed of their belongings.
The footage showed the robber acting aggressively, shoving the employee and swing a chair at the victim who apparently surrendered all his belongings.
Despite the worker raising his arms as a sign to demonstrate he was not a threat or obstacle to the robber, the latter proceeded to swing a plastic chair at him.
Also seen in the other CCTV footage was the robbers’ getaway car.
Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah confirmed they received a police report around 4.55am about the incident.
“The estimated losses suffered by the victims were said to be around RM2,000.
“A special team from the Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Kuching CID have been mobilised to track down the suspects,” he said.
Police are investigating under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed gang robbery.
The section provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.
