Manhunt underway as detainee under rape probe escapes in cuffs

SIBU: Police have launched a manhunt for a foreign detainee who escaped from lawful custody at the Central Police Station yesterday (June 21).

District police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili in a statement, confirmed that the escape was discovered around 4 pm.

This led to the immediate activation of ‘Op Kesan’ involving all available units to track down the suspect, who remains at large.

“The detainee, identified as 25-year-old Buni, was under remand for investigation under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code for rape.

“The escapee was still wearing the standard lock-up shirt and pants, and had his hands cuffed when he fled,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code for escaping from lawful custody, which carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Zulkipli urged those with information on the suspect’s whereabouts to report them to investigating officer ASP Mingat Bakil at 019-8867978, Sibu district police headquarters at 084-344111, or the nearest police station.
