Maritime graduates are important assets to the state’s open seas

SIBU: A total of 62 graduates of the Pelita Mas Laut Maritime Training Institute completed their courses and received their certificates at the Course Completion and Presentation Ceremony 2025 Deck and Engine Marine Certificates held at the Islamic Complex here yesterday (Nov 22).

The ceremony was officiated by the Director of Sarawak Regional Marine Department, Bianus Muyou, expressing his appreciation to the graduates for successfully completed their maritime training which he described as an important foundation for the development of a highly skilled workforce in the state.

He said the success not only marked the end of their studies, but also the beginning of a new journey in the maritime industry which is full of challenges, opportunities and demands for professionalism.

“Today is not just the end of a journey, but the beginning of a new challenge in a maritime career which is a field that demands discipline, knowledge and perseverance,” he stressed.

Bianus also expressed his appreciation to Pelita Mas Laut for its continuous efforts to produce competent local maritime workforce, while emphasising the contributions of parents and families as the main drivers of the graduates’ success.

According to him, Sarawak has great potential in the maritime sector, including oil and gas, logistics, ports, shipbuilding and marine services, in line with its strategic position in Borneo.

“The need for skilled manpower is increasing. Graduates of this institution are important assets that carry the esteem name — Pelita Mas Laut and Sarawak,” he said.

He also stressed on the values ​​of professionalism that must be the foundation of every graduate, including commitment to safety, integrity and mental as well as physical resilience to face challenges in the open sea.

Meanwhile, Bianus lauded Yayasan Sarawak’s continued commitment to strengthening human capital development through scholarship schemes, technical training loans and skills enhancement programmes to ensure that more Sarawakians are able to venture into high-potential sectors including maritime.

Also present were the deputy director (Education) of the Yayasan Sarawak, Watson Chunggat Leonard Doo; managing director of Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd Group, Masni Amit; vice-chancellor of University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid; general manager of Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd Group, Mohamad Nazim Masni and director (Operations) of Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd Group, Mohamad Safrin Masni.
