KUCHING: In conjunction with this year’s Gawai Dayak celebration, PETRONAS has released a heartwarming short film titled ‘Marked’ (Tanda Kasih ), which pays tribute to the themes of personal resilience, cultural pride, and the strength of family ties.

The film centres on Melia, a young Iban girl navigating the emotional challenges of growing up with a prominent birthmark on her forehead.
As the Gawai festivities draw near, she is asked to wear the sugu tinggi – the traditional Iban women’s headdress that symbolises dignity and cultural heritage.
However, Melia is gripped by self-doubt, questioning her worthiness to don such a significant emblem of tradition.
Her struggle is largely invisible to those around her, except to her grandmother, whose quiet strength and unwavering love gently guide her toward self-acceptance.
Through her grandmother’s support, Melia comes to embrace her unique identity, learning that true strength lies in honouring one’s roots and individuality.
PETRONAS’ Vice President of Group Strategic Relations and Communications, Norafizal Mat Saad, said more than just a tale of self-discovery, ‘Marked’ also shines a light on the deep bonds that connect families and communities, particularly during the Gawai season.
“At PETRONAS, we believe in the power of storytelling to celebrate the diversity and beauty of our people and cultures.
“ ’Marked’ is a tribute to the strength within our communities and the richness of the Iban tradition.
“It reflects the values of unity and shared purpose, reminding us that when we support one another, we create space for everyone to belong and thrive,” she said.
The film aims to inspire Malaysians to embrace their heritage with pride, and to find strength through shared experiences and mutual respect.
In the spirit of the harvest festivals, PETRONAS has also released ‘Crown of Love’ ( Mahkota Teristimewa ), a Kaamatan-themed story celebrating the strength of community and the true meaning of love.
While rooted in different cultural traditions, both films underscore the importance of embracing diversity and staying true to oneself – a reflection of the nation’s multicultural identity.
‘Marked’ is now available for viewing on PETRONAS’ official YouTube and Facebook channels.
