KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has responded to public concerns over the condition of the toilet facility at the 3rd Mile Market, attributing the issue to a blockage in the floor trap and an ageing drainage system.

MPP Chairman Councillor Tan Kai said that the obstruction had resulted in poor drainage and occasional flooding, necessitating major rectification works.

“The toilet facility is very old and in need of a complete upgrade,” he said.

To address the problem, MPP has secured funding under the BP1 allocation this year for a full-scale upgrading of the facility.

The project was tendered through an open tender process, which was published on May 10, 2025 and closed on May 19, 2025.

Following the evaluation process, the contract was officially awarded today, with the same date marking the formal handover to the appointed contractor.

The project duration is set for five months.

The upgrading works will involve the construction of new toilet cubicles, along with comprehensive new tiling throughout the facility to enhance cleanliness and durability.

All existing windows and doors will be replaced to ensure better ventilation, security, and ease of maintenance.

A new ceiling will also be installed as part of the refurbishment.

In addition, the sanitary fittings will be upgraded to more modern and efficient options.

A table top with integrated wash-hand basins will be added to improve hygiene and user convenience.

The plumbing system will be overhauled to resolve the previous drainage issues, and downlights will be installed to provide better overall lighting within the toilet area.

MPP has assured hawkers and market-goers that the issue is being handled with urgency and diligence.

The council also expressed regret over any inconvenience caused during the upgrading period and reaffirmed its commitment to improving public facilities and services for the community.
