MIRI: Five individuals, including a married couple and a woman, have been apprehended by Miri Police on Saturday, suspected of orchestrating a daring theft at a local jewellery store.
The incident occurred at around 12.10 pm on High Street here, where two gold necklaces, weighing a total of 18.8 grams and valued at RM10,000, were stolen.
The arrests were made by the Miri Criminal Investigation Division (CID) less than four hours after the crime took place.
Initial investigations reveal that four of the five suspects have previous criminal records, including drug-related offences.
The group was tracked down across various locations here, including a rented room on Kwang Tung Street.
It has been reported that the stolen gold was subsequently sold at a nearby money-lender outlet.
During the police raid, officers also seized a rented Perodua Arus car used during the heist, along with RM2,000 in cash.
On the day of the incident, the husband and wife duo had pretended to be potential customers interested in purchasing gold.
They lingered in the store for approximately 20 minutes before making off with the two necklaces, quickly departing in a parked Arus vehicle nearby.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which deals with theft.
All suspects are now in custody for further investigation as the police delve deeper into this brazen crime.
