TOKYO: Marubeni Corporation, a leading Japanese integrated trading and investment conglomerate, has reiterated its commitment to explore sustainable projects in Sarawak.

This was discussed during a follow-up meeting on Wednesday (Dec 18) to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in May 2024 between Marubeni Corporation and Invest Sarawak Sdn Bhd.

The meeting, led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, highlighted potential projects in chemical production and renewable energy, aligning with Sarawak’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

PCDS 2030 prioritises economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability, and Marubeni’s initiatives are seen as a valuable contribution to these goals.

Awang Tengah, who is also the for International Trade, Industry, and Investment (Mintred) Minister, expressed optimism about Marubeni’s continued interest and investment.

He stressed the importance of such collaborations in advancing sustainable development in Sarawak and conveyed the state’s eagerness to strengthen its partnership with the corporation to support the state’s green growth and long-term development goals.

“This meeting underscores Sarawak’s commitment to advance its sustainability goals while fostering international partnerships that contribute to a cleaner and more prosperous future,” he said.

On May 15, InvestSarawak signed an MoU with Marubeni Corporation to facilitate and accelerate the development of a Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) project in Sarawak.

The MoU outlined collaboration to conduct a joint pre-feasibility study (Pre-FS) for a commercial-scale SAF value chain in Sarawak.

The goal is to confirm the feasibility of producing SAF using biomass feedstock and assess the potential technology pathways for SAF production in Sarawak.

Both parties aim to establish a commercial-scale SAF value chain for local consumption or export by 2030.

Also present were Mintred Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, advisor Datuk Seri Mohd Naroden Majais; MIDA Tokyo director Izran Abdullah; Invest Sarawak CEO Timothy Ong, and Marubeni senior advisor Kuninori Kuroishi.
