KUCHING: The SmartGreen Committee of Mas Gading Community College has collaborated with the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to learn and implement the Takakura composting technique.

The initiative aims to raise awareness on the importance of food waste management while promoting green practices within the community.

The programme, held at the MBKS Stutong Green Centre for the first session and subsequently at the college, involved both theoretical and practical sessions.

Participants were introduced to the unique Takakura method originating from Japan.

This technique is known for its ability to convert food waste into high-quality compost in a short period without producing unpleasant odours.

The Takakura composting method is highly suitable for all community groups, especially small households.

It is not only easy to implement but also significantly cheaper than commercially available compost.

The process involves four simple steps: preparing a fermentation solution, creating compost seeds, constructing a compost storage container, and managing the composting process.

Mas Gading Community College views this programme as an opportunity to enhance their staff’s knowledge in the field of environmental sustainability.

“As an educational institution, we aim to ensure that our staff and students are exposed to sustainable practices that align with the country’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said Mas Gading Community College director Khalid Husseine Tuah.

Throughout the learning sessions, participants were provided with information on selecting appropriate waste materials, the fermentation process using micro-organism cultures, and maintaining the compost to ensure its effectiveness in agriculture.

Live demonstrations were also conducted to give participants a clearer understanding of the method.

This programme also fosters closer collaboration between the college and local authorities in empowering eco-friendly practices within the local community.

MBKS expressed their willingness to undertake more community projects with educational institutions to ensure the continued growth of environmental sustainability awareness.

Mas Gading Community College hopes that the knowledge gained will be shared with students and the local community through future awareness programmes.

They also plan to conduct research on the effectiveness of this technique in the local context to ensure its broader adoption.

With initiatives like these, it is hoped that more organisations and individuals will take proactive steps to reduce waste through innovative and eco-friendly methods, thereby supporting the country’s sustainable development agenda.
