LUNDU: Residents of Kampung Selampit have called on Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol to take a more proactive role in monitoring the progress of the Selampit Bridge project.

Kampung Selampit 1 village chief Adiren Gabin Gobob said that while construction works are ongoing, local residents have yet to see Mordi on the ground since the project began.
He pointed out that this is a contrasting difference to regular site visits made by Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang.
“To my knowledge, we have yet to see our MP (Mordi) visiting the construction site since the commencement of the project, but Billy has been actively on the ground to see the progress,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
Adiren expressed hope that the project would be completed within the promised timeline, while acknowledging challenges such as weather conditions that may affect the pace of work.
“Nevertheless, I hope the contractors are able to deliver as planned, as the bridge will bring significant benefits to the local community,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kampung Selampit 2 village chief Nyagah Gini shared similar sentiments, saying villagers are eager to see the completion of the bridge as scheduled within the three years period.
He said while some progress has been made, weather-related disruptions—particularly during the rainy season—often delay work due to high water levels at the construction site.
“Work is typically halted during the rainy season when river water levels rise, affecting site accessibility. However, some progress has been made at the construction site,” he said.
Nyagah also urged for work to be carried out for the access road leading to the Selampit Bridge, highlighting its importance in improving connectivity for the local community.
“The Selampit Bridge and access road would significantly ease travel for villagers and improve connectivity to surrounding areas,” he said.
During the recent Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, Billy highlighted that approximately RM22 million is still required to complete the access road to the Selampit Bridge.
Without the connecting road, the bridge remains a stranded asset that cannot serve the surrounding communities effectively.
Despite ongoing construction works, the bridge currently cannot be utilised due to the lack of proper road access.
The situation has drawn criticism from voters in the Mas Gading parliamentary constituency, who are increasingly frustrated over what they perceive as a lack of initiative from Mordi.
Public concerns have centered on the MP’s perceived failure to prioritise and push for the completion of the access road, a key component to ensuring the bridge’s functionality.
While attention has been given to the physical structure, the overall project remains incomplete and does not yet contribute to the area’s connectivity or development.
Critics have also expressed disappointment over the MP’s handling of the matter, noting a lack of visible or decisive action in addressing the delays.
There are growing calls for greater accountability and for leadership that focuses on large-scale, impactful development efforts rather than routine engagements.
After two terms in office, expectations for comprehensive infrastructure improvements remain unmet, with the Selampit Bridge access road emerging as a symbol of stalled progress in Mas Gading.
