BRUSSELS: A massive fire tore through a residential area in Krokstadelva in Norway’s Drammen municipality on Friday, destroying more than 100 homes and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate as firefighters struggled to bring the blaze under control.
Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported, citing broadcaster NRK, that Police said late Friday evening that they still had not contained the fire, which began in a townhouse before spreading to a nearby residential area and surrounding forest terrain.
“More than 100 residential units have been lost, and the fire is still out of control,” the police said.
Several hundred people have been evacuated from the area as the fire continued to spread toward additional homes.
Authorities urged residents in nearby neighbourhoods to leave their houses as a precaution.
Operations manager Lise Bjornsund said there had been no reports of injuries, but described the situation as serious, with the fire still burning intensely.
The blaze has also reached forested areas around Krokstadelva, where firefighting efforts have been supported by a fire helicopter. – BERNAMA-ANADOLU
