KUCHING: Mastery of language—particularly English—is essential for anyone aspiring to be a good journalist.
Veteran journalist and political observer Francis Paul Siah said journalists must read widely and consistently to expand their vocabulary and deepen their understanding of language.
“Most importantly, write every day and be consistent with it as it would sharpen your grammar.
“It would be better if one could keep a personal vocabulary journal, as it is necessary for us to remember the words that we learn every day.
“We must also read international news sources such as Reuters to become familiar with their in-house style and journalistic standards,” he said.
He said this during the Writing and Journalism workshop, attended by reporters and editors from Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak at Sarawak State Library (Pustaka) here today.
On another note, Siah then stated to futher master the English language, one must also listen continuously to English content programmea, most specifically podcast.
“Podcast such as British Broadcasting Channel (BBC), National Public Radio (NPR) and Cable News Network (CNN) are good quality ones. Listen to how they pronounce their words.
“We must also be aware that there will be more words being added to the Oxford dictionary,” he added.
He then stated that practicing speaking English is also crucial for improving proficiency.
“Speak more, and if you can, speak in front of a mirror to further improve. It can help enhance your fluency.
“But a journalist must also be patient and consistent. With time and dedication, we can truly master the language,” he added.
