KUCHING: The transfer of MASwings’ ownership to the Sarawak government is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
In a media release, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) said they are working closely with all stakeholders, including shareholder Khazanah Nasional Berhad, to ensure a seamless transition and compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory frameworks.
Throughout this transition period, MASwings will continue operating as usual under the purview of MAG, with no disruptions to flight schedules, ensuring uninterrupted air services for the communities that rely on them, it added.
Sarawak formalised its acquisition of MASwings through the signing of a Sale Purchase Agreement (SPA) between the Sarawak government and MAG at a leading hotel here on Wednesday (Feb 12).
During the ceremony, MAG non-executive director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir expressed his appreciation to the Sarawak government for its commitment to ensuring MASwings continues to serve as a vital link for communities in Borneo.
Amirul highlighted the deep-rooted history of aviation in Sarawak, dating back to 1922 when a Dutch flying boat was first spotted over Belaga. A century later, the transition of MASwings to Sarawak’s ownership signals more than just a change in leadership, it represents a commitment to strengthening regional connectivity.
“For the past 18 years, MASwings has been more than just an airline. It has been a lifeline for rural communities, ensuring accessibility to education, healthcare and business opportunities. This transition guarantees that those connections remain strong, reliable and responsive to the needs of Sarawak and Sabah,” he said.
He also acknowledged the contribution of MASwings’s 300 employees, noting that while the transition was bittersweet for MAG, it was also a moment of opportunity.
“With the right vision and strategy, MASwings will grow stronger and unlock new potential under Sarawak’s stewardship,” he added.
The state’s enhanced air connectivity through MASwings is expected to accelerate key sectors such as tourism, agriculture and logistics, expanding Sarawak’s role as a key economic hub in Malaysia and ASEAN.
Improved air transport will support tourism growth, positioning Sarawak as a premier destination. Additionally, better cargo and freight services will benefit agriculture and agro-based industries, boosting rural economies and increasing export opportunities.
While MAG bids farewell to MASwings, the company remains committed to working closely with Sarawak’s newly acquired airline to ensure a smooth transition for passengers and staff.
“Flights will continue as scheduled, and customers can be assured of uninterrupted air connectivity. We see this as the beginning of a stronger partnership between MAG and AirBorneo, contributing to Malaysia’s aviation growth,” Amirul stated.
With the aviation industry rebounding post-pandemic and global market conditions shifting, collaboration will be crucial for resilience.
“The aviation sector has an economic multiplier effect of 3.25x, with each aviation job creating 6.1 additional jobs in other industries,” he said.
In his closing remarks, Amirul extended his gratitude to the Premier, the state government, and MASwings employees for their dedication in making the transition seamless.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Federal Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
