Matang housing projects achieve major progress

KUCHING: The Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak (MPHLG) has announced significant progress in two long-delayed housing projects in Matang which are Taman Millennium and Taman Greenwoods.

The ministry, in a statement today, said a special meeting chaired by Deputy Minister for Public Health and Housing, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee was held on May 15 to address lingering issues surrounding both projects while also serving as a platform for house purchasers to voice concerns and seek clarifications directly from the relevant authorities and developers.

The Taman Millennium project, originally scheduled for completion in 2020, faced a five-year delay due to challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic and the winding-up of the original developer by the High Court in 2022, before being revived by a “White Knight” developer.

As of April 30, the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has issued the Road Certificate for Taman Millennium, which is now in its final phase pending the issuance of the Occupation Permit (OP), the last step before purchasers can officially move in.

Meanwhile, the Taman Greenwoods housing project, delayed for eight years, received its Road Certificate on Nov 4, and despite initial delays in the issuance of the Occupation Permit (OP) due to technical compliance issues, the first batch of OPs was granted on Apr 15.

“The ministry acknowledges the understandable frustration faced by purchasers who have waited years to obtain their house keys,” the statement said.

“The developer concerned is strongly urged to fulfil all outstanding requirements without further delay.”

During the meeting, Michael stressed that compliance with housing laws is both a legal and moral obligation.

“Developers must uphold their responsibilities under the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Ordinance, 2013 and its Regulations, 2014.

“Any violation of homebuyers’ rights will be treated as a breach of the law, and the Ministry will not hesitate to act,” he said.

He added that for many, owning a home is a result of a lifetime of sacrifice, and developers must honour the statutory rights enshrined in the Sale and Purchase Agreement.
