MUKAH: The Sarawak Youth Awards 2024 turned out to be an unexpected blessing for small entrepreneur, Mattasan Rohani.
Mattasan, 36, from Miri, won the award in the male category.
Shortly afterwards, he credited his success to four elements promoted by the leadership of the Miri Youth Association.
“This involves volunteering, sports, entrepreneurship and digital transformation into the multimedia world.
“These four elements are brought into the association every term and it has yielded good results,” he said yesterday.
He also pointed to encouragement from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Talent Development.
“These two ministries are like fathers to our association to implement various programmes and activities,” he said, pointing out that without their support his award would not have come to pass. .
Meanwhile, the winner of the Sarawak Youth Award 2024 for the women’s category was Debbie Gibson Medan, 28.
Previously, she had won the 2023 Prime Ministerial Youth Award for the Women’s Individual category (National Level).
Debbie, who is from Bintulu, has adhered to the principle of giving give to society throughout her journey as an activist or volunteer.
“Every year or participating in any volunteer programme, I have the initiative to give back to the community.
“The motivation for me to continue moving forward is to see Sarawak youth hone their potential and need to hone it further.
“I believe there is still a lot of untapped talent and potential among the youth in Sarawak,” she said.
Mattasan and Debbie took home RM5,000 in cash, a trophy and a certificate.
