KUCHING: Tan Sri Datuk Sri William Mawan Ikom has once again reaffirmed his unwavering support for the Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) Gawai Golf tournament, continuing his longstanding role as patron with a RM20,000 contribution towards this year’s tournament.
The cheque was handed over at his office on Tuesday (April 14) to KGS captain, Roland Phang Cheng Xian, and members of the organising committee, marking a strong and encouraging start to preparations for the highly anticipated event scheduled on June 13.
The annual tournament is expected to attract some 240 golfers, competing across three categories – Men’s Open, Senior, and Ladies.
In a statement issued by the organisers recently stated that participants can also look forward to attractive prizes, including lucky draw rewards and a hole-in-one challenge, alongside a festive atmosphere featuring cultural performances and live band entertainment in conjunction with the Gawai celebration.
Phang described Mawan’s continued backing as instrumental to the success and growth of the tournament over the years.
“His unwavering support has been vital in enabling us to organise this event, which not only brings together members and guests for a day of golf, but also celebrates the joy, culture, and unity of the Gawai festival,” he said in the same statement.
He added that the early contribution reflects a positive start for this year’s edition and expressed optimism for strong participation from club members and the wider golfing community.
Phang also placed on record his appreciation to former KGS captain, Ting Kee Suen, and organising team member, Wilfred Mujah, for their efforts in facilitating the sponsorship.
“We look forward to the continued support of all members and warmly encourage everyone to take part in our upcoming Gawai Golf this June,” he said.
Registration details for the tournament are expected to be announced soon.
Phang concluded by extending festive greetings in advance, saying, “Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai.”
