KUCHING: The Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre continues to play a significant role as a vital pillar of local economy and an important cultural and culinary space.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the hawker centre has been operating for over 30 years with many stalls operated across generations, contributing to the development of the neighbourhood while providing affordable meals to residents.

Wee delivering a short speech.

“Our councillors frequently visit this hawker centre, not only to enjoy the food but also to receive feedback from hawkers and the community.

“This place is still important for local grassroots economy to grow, and I want to encourage our hawkers to continue improving food quality, hygiene standards and explore the possibility of extended operating hours to boost economic vibrancy,” said Wee.

He said this during a Chinese New Year gathering jointly organised by MBKS Matang Road JKKK and the community at Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre yesterday (Feb 26).

He said the nearby KMC flats house many B40 residents, and hawkers play an important role by offering affordable dining options, making meaningful contributions to society.

“Affordable prices do not mean compromising on quality. Maintaining food standards, hygiene and safety is essential,” he said.

He also pointed out that Kuching’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy places greater responsibility on preserving and promoting traditional local cuisine as part of the city’s identity.

In addition, Wee reminded hawkers to maintain consistent operating hours and consider evening operations, as dining habits gradually return to normal after the pandemic, potentially increasing business opportunities.

“The surrounding area has evolved from an entertainment zone into a food street, presenting further development potential.

“The council will continue planning improvements and urged hawkers to prepare for upcoming changes,” he added.
