KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has commended the swift response and dedication of local authorities and personnel following an incident involving a fallen tree that obstructed a public road recently.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Wee acknowledged the coordinated efforts led by the MBKS Landscape Division, Engineering Division, contractors, and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in resolving the matter promptly.
“As soon as the report was received, our Landscape Officer, along with MBKS staff, immediately coordinated a response,” he said.
“They were supported by our contractors and assisted by Bomba.
“Together, they worked diligently under pressure and in challenging conditions to clear the tree and reopen the road.”
Wee also praised MBKS councilors, Eric Tay and Albert Tay, who were among the first responders on the ground, who took the initiative to secure the affected area to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.
“This kind of proactive measure is not new at MBKS; it is part of our everyday commitment,” he said.
“Everyone here plays their part quietly, out of duty and care for the community.”
Wee visited the site the following morning alongside MBKS senior officers to assess the situation, where he confirmed that the tree was removed and the damaged barricade repaired within the same day.
“This kind of swift and thorough response speaks volumes of the professionalism and teamwork within MBKS,” he added.
Wee called for understanding and empathy, acknowledging public comments and criticisms that surfaced after the incident.
“While feedback is always welcome, I hope the public will also take a moment to recognise the real efforts and sacrifices made by our staff on the ground.
“These are men and women who work long hours, often behind the scenes, only doing what they believe is right for the community,” he said.
“To those who were inconvenienced, I sincerely apologise. But I also ask for your support.
“The well-being of this city rests on the shoulders of many unsung heroes.”
