KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng received the prestigious Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senatorship in recognition of his outstanding contributions to leadership development and community service.
The lifetime honour was presented to him during the 70th JCI Kuching Installation and Awards Night at Theatre Hotel, here last night (Feb 9).
It is given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the organisation.
Reflecting on his nearly three decades with JCI since 1995, Wee described the recognition as a humbling experience and expressed his gratitude for being part of a distinguished group of leaders.
“Receiving the JCI Senatorship is truly an honour. I am grateful for this recognition and the opportunity to be among such distinguished individuals,” he said.

Acknowledging JCI’s role in shaping future leaders, he emphasised the growing need for strong leadership and highlighted how organisations like JCI provide essential skills to drive positive change.
“Now more than ever, our world needs great leaders. JCI plays a crucial role in equipping young people with the skills they need to make a real impact,” he added.
As Mayor of Kuching, Wee reaffirmed his commitment to the city’s growth, highlighting Kuching’s rich culture, diversity, and opportunity while crediting the collaborative efforts of individuals who share a common vision and stressing that progress is achieved through unity.
He also praised JCI’s core values, saying leadership, service, and community engagement align closely with his belief in empowering people.
“True progress comes from empowering others. JCI builds future leaders by fostering knowledge, education, exchange, fellowship, and understanding,” he said.
Encouraging young people to take an active role in leadership, he urged them to step forward and seize opportunities for personal growth.
“To all the youth out there, don’t just stand by — find the leader in yourselves, no matter your field or future,” he said.
In accepting the honour, Wee pledged to continue his efforts in fostering collaboration and youth empowerment, reaffirming his dedication to making Kuching a stronger, more liveable, and united city.
