KUCHING: Following a series of break-ins at KMC flats, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is exploring the possibility of setting up a security post in the area in discussions with police.

MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Datuk Dr Zaiedi Suhaili, visited the flats this morning to assess the situation.

“Whenever an issue arises, we go down to assess and take action to ensure everyone’s safety. We hope this will not become a political issue.

“We are talking to police to see whether we’ll be able to set up a ‘pondok’ (security post) around that area,” he said during a press conference for the Meniti Cakerawala 2.0 event at the MBKS building today.

Wee revealed that nine break-ins occurred this year, although only four were formally reported.

“Some residents had forgotten to lock their doors or windows, which contributed to the incidents.

“Some intruders entered through toilet windows or unlocked doors. That is why we are reminding residents to secure their homes properly,” he said, adding that 500 notices will be issued to remind the residents to secure their homes.

He also assured that the council would assist residents unable to afford door reinforcements.

“We will pay for them to make sure everything is properly locked up,” he said.

While most stolen items were of minor value, often just a few ringgit, Wee stressed that theft is serious regardless of the amount.
