KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is striving to make Kuching the first ageing-friendly city in Sarawak.

Recognizing that Sarawak will transition into an ageing society by 2028, MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the council is currently developing a plan to ensure the city becomes more accommodating for elderly residents.

“We are moving towards a caring and compassionate society, and we are actively seeking feedback from elderly individuals on the future plans for an ageing-friendly city,” he stated.

Wee emphasised that community engagement will be a significant aspect of the council’s efforts in this regard.

“As a council, we need to establish a strong connection with the community, and we will focus on this as we lay out our plans for an ageing-friendly society,” he added.

He said this during a Parent’s Day dinner ceremony held at the MBKS community hall yesterday (June 28) when reporters approached him for comments.

Regarding the Parent’s Day programme, Wee highlighted its objective of rekindling close and affectionate relationships between parents and children.

“The digital era seems to have distanced children from their parents’ love. Everyone is so engrossed with their mobile devices that we hardly spend quality time with our parents. This program aims to bring back the bond between children and their parents,” he explained.

Organised by 38 Yayasan Amal Cinta and the Kuching Love Book Association, the programme attracted over 200 participants.

MBKS councillor Kho Teck Wan and former mayor Datuk Song See Guan were also in attendance at the event.
