KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has taken constructive action to mitigate issues such as flooding and potholes that have been identified along Lorong Sungai Apong near the Sungai Apong Basketball Court (SABA).

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the problems were discovered during a recent walkabout in the area, where he observed drainage water overflowing onto the road.

He said discussions with nearby residents revealed that the existing culvert was overfilled, preventing smooth water flow into the river.

“During periods of heavy rain, high water discharge from upstream drains causes the road and surrounding areas to flood, creating hazardous conditions for road users,” he said in a press statement.

The situation has caused inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians, particularly schoolchildren who regularly use the route.

Wee also noted the presence of several potholes along the front section of the road leading towards Kampung Sungai Apong.

Following the visit, he instructed the MBKS Engineering team to carry out immediate repair works, and the potholes along the affected stretch have since been filled to improve road safety.

“We are exploring long-term solutions to address the drainage issue and are actively seeking funds to implement the necessary drainage improvement works to prevent future flooding,” he said.

Wee reaffirmed that MBKS remains committed to ensuring safe and well-maintained public infrastructures for the community.
