KUCHING: A long-overdue upgrade to a public toilet facility in Padungan here has been completed, marking a significant improvement to public amenities in the busy heritage area.

The facility was last upgraded in 1993, and after more than three decades of continuous use, refurbishment became necessary to meet modern cleanliness, safety, and accessibility standards.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the upgrade reflects the council’s commitment to inclusivity and user comfort.

“This project ensures the facility is cleaner, safer, and accessible to everyone.”

He said this to reporters at the handing-over ceremony of the upgraded public toilet at Padungan Garden Public Toilet, Jalan Padungan today.

“The upgrading works focused on improving both the internal toilet facilities and the surrounding environment to create a safer, more comfortable experience for all users.

“Among the key enhancements are the provision of an OKU-friendly toilet, a dedicated baby diaper changing room, and improved lighting along nearby footpaths.”

Additional works included the construction of a pavilion and related enhancement works aimed at improving overall usability and aesthetic appeal of the area.

He added that the project was carried out at a total construction cost of RM174,250.

“These upgrades place strong emphasis on inclusivity, ensuring the facilities better serve persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and families with young children.

“The improved public toilet also benefits residents and tourists, particularly given Padungan’s status as a busy commercial and heritage precinct.

“Clean, safe, and accessible public facilities are essential in high-traffic public spaces, contributing to public health, safety, and a positive visitor experience.

“The upgrading project was funded under the BP1 allocation from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.

“This funding highlights the continued cooperation between the federal government and local authorities in improving public infrastructure nationwide.”

To ensure sustainability, a nominal charge of 20 sen per entrance has been set for public use of the facility.

MBKS reaffirmed its commitment to continuously upgrading public facilities that prioritise cleanliness, safety, and accessibility for the community.

“Through such initiatives, the council aims to enhance quality of life while preserving the historical and cultural value of Padungan for future generations,” Wee said.
