KUCHING: The status of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) as the largest local authority (PBT) in Sarawak comes with a responsibility to lead, set standards and serve as a benchmark for other councils across the state.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said MBKS’s position places it at the forefront of policy implementation, governance and service delivery, making Kuching city a key reference point in Sarawak’s overall development.
“Being the largest does not mean one can act at will. It means everyone is watching what we do, including what we have done well and what still needs improvement,” he said in his speech during MBKS’ annual dinner held here on Sunday (Dec 14).
He said every decision and initiative undertaken by MBKS will serve as a benchmark for other local authorities, and therefore the leadership demonstrated must be grounded in integrity, accountability and the courage to make the right decisions.
He said true leadership is not merely about implementing good initiatives, but also about having the courage to assess weaknesses and rectify them in the interest of the people.
“When we talk about MBKS, it is not just a city council. MBKS is the face of local authority leadership in Sarawak,” he added.
Dr Sim also reminded that Sarawak is now in a new phase of development and can no longer practise a ‘business as usual’ approach.
“We are in a different era. Sarawak today requires progressive, competitive and forward-looking local authority leadership,” he said.
He urged MBKS personnel to continue strengthening professionalism and commitment, in line with Kuching city’s role as the main gateway to Sarawak.
“When outsiders assess Sarawak, Kuching is the first place they see. We do not want this city to be perceived as lagging behind or mediocre,” he said.
