KUCHING: Superheroes, anime icons and fantasy characters took centre stage last night (Aug 2) as Kuching South City Council (MBKS) hosted its first-ever Cosplay Competition, bringing a fresh wave of creativity and youth engagement to the annual Kuching Festival.
Mayor of MBKS Datuk Wee Hong Seng, who officiated the event at the MBKS Theatre, described the competition as a timely and inclusive initiative.
“This is the very first time MBKS is organising a Cosplay Competition as part of our beloved Kuching Festival, and let me just say, it’s about time.
“MBKS believes in inclusion. We believe that no one should be left behind, and that our city must reflect every segment of our community.
“Whether you’re young or young at heart, into sports or sci-fi, music or manga, there’s always a place for you in Kuching South,” he said.
Wee said the dedication shown by participants reflected real skill and perseverance.
He noted that cosplay contributes to the creative economy through areas such as costume design, makeup artistry, photography, content creation and performance.
“In a time when we often hear concerns about youth engagement, mental health and peer pressure, cosplay offers something positive.
“A safe space where young people can explore who they are, celebrate who they want to be, and connect with others who share their passion.
“In a world full of filters, cosplay allows for authentic connection through fantasy,” he added.
Wee also paid tribute to the organising committee, led by Councillor Chai Ju Loon, and the creative team from Star Studio for successfully integrating cosplay into the festival lineup.
“You have taken a bold step in introducing cosplay to the Kuching Festival, and judging by the turnout and excitement tonight, it’s a huge success,” he said.
He encouraged all participants to be proud of their efforts and to enjoy the moment.
“To all our participants, remember, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about being passionate. Be proud. Be bold.” he said.
