KUCHING: Hawkers at Bintawa Market are now enjoying improved working conditions following the installation of shading, addressing long-standing concerns over inadequate shelter.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the initiative came after his walkabout at the site, where traders highlighted the lack of adequate shelter as a key concern.
“We had promised to install the shade for this market and informed the hawkers that we would start with this section first. At the same time, we received support from the private sector, Trident Quantum Sdn Bhd, through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts.
“This shows the council is not working alone. Both the public and private sectors recognise our efforts as we strive to serve the city better,” he said when officiating at the installation today
Wee added that there are proposals to extend similar installations to the hawker centre, although this would require further study.
“Before approving such requests, we need to carefully assess the situation. For this location, we do not intend to fully cover the hawker centre as ventilation is important. Diners should still be able to enjoy airflow and the surrounding atmosphere. Fully covering the area would make it too warm.
“The current design uses a roll-up system, allowing it to be easily adjusted, even by those with minimal strength. It is primarily meant to block sunlight and, occasionally, rain.
“For the hawker centre, we will study the matter further,” he said.
He noted that the installation benefits not only the hawkers but also members of the public who frequent the market.
“On a sunny day, we will return to observe the conditions and determine how best to extend coverage to affected areas,” he said.
Wee added that similar upgrades are planned for other markets under the council’s jurisdiction, but implementation will depend on available funding.
“Once funding is secured, or with support from other sources, we will proceed with the improvements,” he said.
