KUCHING: The newly repainted multi-purpose court at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Sports Village in Bintawa Industrial Estate was officially launched today, providing enhanced recreational facilities aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and stronger community engagement.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the upgraded facility features three badminton courts, two pickleball courts and one netball court, offering greater opportunities for residents of all ages to participate in sports and recreational activities.

He said the facility reflects MBKS’ commitment to creating inclusive public spaces that encourage physical activity and social interaction.

“These are community spaces where families gather, friendships are built and healthy lifestyles are encouraged,” he said during the launching ceremony.

Wee added that the project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on Good Health and Well-Being by providing residents with accessible sporting facilities.

He also highlighted the court’s role in supporting the Child-Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) undertaken by MBKS, noting that safe and inclusive recreational spaces are essential for the development of children and youth.

“Through facilities such as this, we are creating opportunities for children to engage in sports, build confidence, develop teamwork skills and enjoy active lifestyles from a young age,” he said.

A key feature of the upgraded facility is the introduction of two dedicated pickleball courts to cater to the growing popularity of the sport.

“People of different ages and fitness levels can enjoy the game together, making it an ideal community sport.

“Recognising this trend, MBKS has taken proactive steps to provide dedicated pickleball facilities,” he said.

Wee expressed hope that the new courts would encourage more Kuchingites to embrace active living while strengthening community ties.

He also reminded the public to take responsibility for the facility and refrain from acts of vandalism.

“We hope residents will appreciate and protect this facility so that it can continue benefiting the community for many years to come,” he said.

The multi-purpose court operates daily from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm.

For the time being, court bookings can be made at MBKS Lobby Counter 7 during office hours or by calling 082-354200.

Rental rates for the netball court are RM10 per hour during office hours and RM20 per hour after office hours and on weekends.

Badminton courts are available at RM8 per hour during office hours and RM10 per hour after office hours and on weekends, while pickleball courts are charged at a flat rate of RM30 per hour.
