KUCHING: A total of 1,500 senior citizens in Kuching South will receive RM30 grocery vouchers under the MBKS Senior Citizen Grocery Voucher Programme 2026, organised in conjunction with the Mooncake Festival.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the programme was part of the council’s efforts to care for senior citizens and build a more age-friendly Kuching South.
“This programme may be simple, but it carries an important message.
“Our senior citizens have contributed greatly to our families, our communities and the development of our city.
“We want them to know that they are valued and remembered,” he said at a press conference on the Senior Citizen Grocery Voucher Programme 2026 in conjunction with the Mooncake Festival today.
The programme will cover five MBKS markets: Petanak Market, Stutong Community Market, Bintawa Market, Sungai Apong Market and Kenyalang Market, with 300 vouchers allocated to each market.
Registration will be held at the respective markets on Sept 19 (Saturday) from 7.30am to 10am on a first-come, first-served basis.
Eligible applicants must be aged 58 and above and reside within the MBKS jurisdiction.
They are required to bring their MyKad for verification and are entitled to one RM30 voucher each.
Wee said the vouchers could be redeemed on Sept 23 from 7am to 11am at the respective participating markets and used to purchase groceries and basic food items, including vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, eggs, rice, dry food and other daily necessities.
Recipients must redeem their vouchers at the same market where they registered.
The initiative also reflects the spirit of the Mooncake Festival, traditionally associated with reunion, togetherness and caring for one another.
“Through this programme, we hope to bring that spirit beyond the family and into our wider community,” he added.
