KUCHING: A special one-stop counter set up by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) saw an overwhelming response from the public, particularly senior citizens and students, seeking government assistance.

The temporary counter, which opened at MBKS lobby from 8.30 am to 12 noon yesterday (May 23), was introduced to streamline access to essential services and government aid programmes.

MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the turnout exceeded expectations, with many arriving early to ensure their applications were processed.

“We are greatly encouraged by today’s response, and it reaffirms our belief in people-centric governance that prioritises inclusivity, care, and accessibility,” he said in a statement.

The initiative enabled visitors to apply for several government benefits, including the Kenyalang Gold Card and Senior Citizen Health Benefit (SCHB) programme.

Other services offered included Yayasan Sarawak’s Special Financial Assistance (Bantuan Kewangan Khas) for eligible students, and Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) under NADI.

Applicants were also assisted with registration for Social Security Organisation’s (Socso) Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) and Housewife Social Security Scheme (SKSSR).

Additionally, MBKS provided advisory support on e-Billing and assessment rates, while Affin Bank facilitated applications for the Kenyalang Debit Card.

Due to the high volume of visitors, several counters extended their operational hours to ensure all walk-ins were served.

Wee thanked agencies such as Yayasan Sarawak, NADI, Socso, Affin Bank and community leaders for their collaboration in the effort.

“Their support made it possible for our residents to conveniently access vital services in one location,” he added.

The initiative aligns with MBKS’ goals under the Child Friendly Cities Initiative and its commitment to supporting healthy, active aging in Kuching.
