KUCHING: Kuching South City Hall (MBKS) received its sixth Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at Petanak Centrak Market today.

The device was handed over by the Rotary Club of Kuching Central and the Rotary Club of Singapore East jointly marking a significant milestone in the two clubs’ ongoing corporate social responsibility programme — their sixth such device installed at a public location in Kuching.

The handover ceremony was officiated by MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, who accepted the device on behalf of the community.

Wee described the occasion as a demonstration of how cross-border partnerships between organisations can deliver tangible impact at the grassroots level.

“This is not just a piece of equipment — it is a life-saving device that can make the difference between life and death in an emergency,” he said in his speech.

He added that the choice of Petanak Market as the installation site was deliberate: as one of Kuching’s most frequented wet markets, it draws large daily crowds of traders, hawkers, and shoppers — making the availability of emergency cardiac equipment all the more critical.

Wee urged all who frequent Petanak Market — traders, workers, and visitors alike — to familiarise themselves with the location and operation of the device.

“In an emergency, every second counts. Your knowledge can truly help save a life,” he said.

Tuesday’s handover brings to six the total number of AEDs placed through the joint CSR effort of the two Rotary Clubs.

The AED units have been previously installed at key locations throughout Kuching South which are at Taman Sahabat, Kenyalang Park Market, the MBKS Building, Stutong Market, and the MBKS Indoor Stadium.
