KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) marked another milestone in its child-friendly city efforts with the swearing-in of six additional members to the Kuching South Child Council on Tuesday (April 15).
Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng officiated the ceremony that welcomed the six newly appointed members who join the existing 17 members, bringing the Child Council’s total membership to 23 members.
Established on Aug 10, 2024, the Child Council is the first of its kind in Borneo that plays a pivotal role in strengthening youth participation in civic development.
“I congratulate the new members and reaffirmed MBKS’ commitment to empowering young voices in local governance.
“You have been chosen because you’ve shown strong potential, leadership and the willingness to speak up for other children in our city.”
Wee also stressed the importance of collaboration, empathy and active participation from the Child Council.
“Leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room, but it is about listening, understanding others, and doing what is right for everyone.”
New and existing members are encouraged to bring their individual strengths-might it be in communication, creativity, planning or quiet observation-to the team.
“This Child Council is not about competition. It is about collaboration where everyone has a role to play and every contribution is matters.”
Gratitude was also extended to the parents for their support and acknowledgment was given to the original 17 Council members who laid the foundation for a more inclusive and child-responsive city.
As MBKS continues its journey in becoming a model child-friendly city, the council remains dedicated in supporting Child Council in voicing children’s needs, promoting community values and shaping policies that benefit the city’s youngest citizens.
