KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today invited eligible licensees to submit draft proposals for the Sambungan Kabel Dasar Laut MADANI (SALAM) initiative, a strategic national project under the Universal Service Provision framework.

Interested parties must submit a Registration of Interest along with a Draft Universal Service Plan for evaluation, as required under Regulation 5 of the Communications and Multimedia (Universal Service Provision) Regulations 2002.

“The SALAM initiative will establish a new submarine cable system linking Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, creating a more robust and geographically diverse domestic connectivity network,” said MCMC in a statement today,

The project is designed to strengthen the resilience, reliability and continuity of the country’s communications network, the commission said.

The system will comprise 10 Cable Landing Stations connected via four submarine cable segments spanning approximately 5,582 kilometres.

“The system will introduce geographically diversified connectivity routes to enhance network redundancy, reduce the risk of service disruptions and strengthen Malaysia’s overall communications resilience,” it added.

According to MCMC, the submarine cable network will support the nationwide expansion of broadband and 5G services, while also driving growth in cloud infrastructure, data centres, AI and other emerging digital industries.

Ultimately, the initiative will strengthen Malaysia’s digital economy, advance digital inclusion and reinforce the nation’s long-term resilience, the commission concluded. – BERNAMA
