KOTA SAMARAHAN: A joint operation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Sarawak police has dismantled a syndicate believed to be storing stolen telecommunications equipment after raiding a warehouse and arresting two suspects.
The breakthrough came during ‘Ops Lusuh’, a coordinated enforcement operation conducted from June 18 to 19 across Kuching, Padawan and Kota Samarahan.
Acting on intelligence, enforcement officers raided a premises in Kota Samarahan believed to have been used as a storage facility for stolen telecommunications assets.
The raid uncovered a cache of telecommunications equipment, including base station batteries and Remote Radio Units (RRUs), believed to belong to telecommunications companies and suspected to have been obtained illegally.
Police also detained two individuals to assist in investigation while all recovered equipment was seized as evidence.
MCMC views the theft and vandalism of telecommunications assets as serious criminal offences that not only cause financial losses but also risk disrupting communication services, including critical services that rely on telecommunications networks.
The agency added that those found guilty could be prosecuted under Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
“MCMC remains committed to working closely with the Sarawak Police Contingent, the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT), and other enforcement agencies to combat crimes that threaten the security of the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure.
“This strategic collaboration will continue to be strengthened to ensure the country’s communication networks remain secure, stable and resilient.”
Members of the public are advised to report any suspicious activities involving telecommunications assets to the relevant authorities.
