CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating an individual suspected of uploading a false and highly offensive post on Instagram, targeting the nation’s judicial institution.

MCMC in its statement said the post, which contains misleading content, pertains to the appointment of the Chief Justice of Malaysia.

Following a complaint received, enforcement officers recorded the individual’s statement at 2:30 pm today at the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters.

During the investigation, authorities also seized one mobile phone and a SIM card.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which provides for a fine of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC stressed that it takes the spread of false and extreme content seriously, especially when it undermines the integrity of national institutions such as the judiciary.

“The misuse of social media for such purposes can erode public trust and disrupt national harmony.

“Stern action will be taken in accordance with existing laws,” it said.
